Nope, you don't need a Nintendo subscription to enjoy the basic goodness of Animal Crossing on your Switch. You can play, decorate, and chill with your animal friends all you want offline. However, if you're looking to visit your friends' islands or invite them to yours, that’s when you’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. It also lets you back up your island to the cloud, just in case.

No Nintendo subscription required for solo play! But for multiplayer fun and cloud backups, yeah, you'll want Nintendo Switch Online.

To keep it simple, solo? No. Multiplayer? Yes. Nintendo Switch Online is your ticket to the wider world of Animal Crossing antics with friends.

If you're an Animal Crossing player, you need to download the Playbite app!

Playbite is like an arcade in your phone: you get to play all kinds of fun and simple games, compete with friends and others, and win cool prizes from all your favorite brands!

One of those prizes is the official Nintendo eShop gift card, which you can win and use to get anything you want essentially for free!

In case you’re wondering, this is how it works:

Playbite makes money from (not super annoying) ads and (totally optional) in-app purchases. The app then uses that money to reward players like you with prizes!

Download Playbite for free, available on the App Store and Play Store!

The brands referenced on this page are not sponsors of the rewards or otherwise affiliated with this company.
