You can absolutely play with the Joy-Cons, but for serious smashing, a GameCube controller is pretty much the gold standard.

Nope, you don't need a special controller! You can use the Joy-Cons that come with the Switch. But, a Pro Controller or GameCube controller might give you an edge!
