Nope! You can play the story mode and build your own levels offline. But you'll need online to share and play other people's levels.
You totally need online to get the most outta Super Mario Maker 2. No internet, no community levels!
I played the whole story mode offline just fine! But yeah, online is a must for the community features.
You can definitely play without online, but it's gonna be a much richer experience if you connect and explore other players' levels.
