Not exactly! You don't NEED Nintendo Online to enjoy the main features of Animal Crossing: New Horizons like decorating your island, meeting adorable animal villagers, and catching bugs. However, if you wanna visit your friends' islands or have them come to yours, then yes, a Nintendo Online subscription is required.
Absolutely need it for the full experience. Visiting friends' islands is half the fun!
