Does losing life count as damage in Magic The Gathering?
Nah, they're diff. Damage leads to life loss, sure, but not all life loss is from damage. Think of damage as a subset of life loss. Like, if you're paying life to draw cards or something, that's on you, no damage dealt.

Nope, losing life isn't the same as taking damage in MTG. Damage can cause you to lose life, but there are also other ways to lose life that don't involve damage, like paying life for a card's cost or an effect that simply says 'lose life'. So, you can lose life without ever taking damage!
I learned this the hard way in a tourney: losing life ≠ taking damage. Played an effect thinking I’d get around damage prevention and lost because of it. Always read the card text!
Here's the hot take: calling life loss 'damage' is a rookie mistake. Big difference in the rules. Don't mix them up in a game, or you'll confuse effects that prevent damage with those that prevent life loss.
