Nope, Malfunction won't stop your Staff of Wild Magus from doing its thing in MTG. Malfunction targets creatures or artifacts directly, tapping them and keeping them from untapping during their controller's untap step. However, Staff of Wild Magus doesn't require tapping to activate its ability. So, even if it's under Malfunction's effect, you can still gain life when you play a land of the appropriate type!

Actually, Malfunction won't impact Staff of Wild Magus at all since the Staff's ability is triggered and doesn't require tapping. Malfunction is more about keeping a creature or artifact tapped. Staff of Wild Magus will still let you gain that precious life whenever you play a land.
