Does 'Play' Mean 'Cast' in Magic The Gathering (MTG)?
ComposingGuru路7 months agoIn MTG, 'play' and 'cast' are similar but not exactly the same. You 'cast' spells (including creatures, instants, sorceries, etc.), which involves paying their mana cost and putting them on the stack. 'Play' refers to either putting a land onto the battlefield during your turn or casting a spell. So, all casts are plays, but not all plays are casts. Basically, casting is a type of playing.

Nope. When you 'play' a card, it could be a land or casting a spell. But 'cast' is just for spells. Think of it like every square is a rectangle, but not every rectangle is a square scenario!
Casting is just for spells. When you 'play' a card, you could be doing more than just casting鈥攊t includes dropping lands too. So, not the same thing!
