From personal experience, the PS4 doesn't read PS3 discs at all. You can only play PS3 games through PlayStation Now.

Nope, the PS4 can't play PS3 discs directly. But good news, you can stream some PS3 games through PlayStation Now!

If you're thinking of playing old PS3 games on a PS4, you'll need to use PlayStation Now. Discs won't work.
