Do Sword Effects Work on Planeswalkers in MTG?
EarningOunce路7 months agoSo, you're asking if your shiny swords can pick a fight with a planeswalker? Well, the short answer is: it's complicated. Sword effects in MTG refer to abilities granted by equipping a creature with a 'Sword of' artifact, like Sword of Fire and Ice. These effects usually trigger upon dealing combat damage. Now, for the twist - when your creature swings with a sword at an opponent, you're hitting the player, not their planeswalker directly. However, if the sword has a secondary effect that says 'deal damage to any target', you could aim that effect at a planeswalker after the initial damage goes through. So, the direct answer is no, but some clever aiming can indeed affect those powerful mages!

nah, swords can't hit planeswalkers directly. You're just smacking the player and hoping for splash damage.
Used Sword of Sinew and Steel's effect to wipe an opponent's planeswalker last night. Felt good. Direct hits? No. But yes for the 'any target' workaround.
