Honestly, I think it all comes down to nostalgia glasses. People remember the Hot Wheels of their youth as being better because they're remembering the joy of playing with them. The cars today are just as good, quality-wise, and there's a wider variety than ever before.
Hot Wheels? Worse? Never! I've been collecting for years and can tell you the creativity and detail in recent models blow the old ones out of the water. The special editions and collaborations are something we could've only dreamed of back in the day.
Actually, I miss the simplicity and durability of the older models. The new ones seem more focused on fancy designs than playability. Just my two cents.
