Huge is an understatement. One Piece is colossal in Japan. You see Luffy's face more often than you see the sun. It's on clothes, billboards, even on food packaging. The fan base is massive, and it spans generations. It's like the Beatles of manga and anime, legendary.
I'm gonna go against the grain here and say: it depends on who you ask. Yeah, it's popular, but not everyone is into it. Some folks prefer other genres or newer series. It's big but not everything to everyone.
Was in Japan last year, and literally, every second store in Akihabara had some sort of One Piece merchandise. They even had a One Piece themed cafe. If that's not massive, I don't know what is.
