You can't retrieve deleted messages directly, but if you have Notifications turned on in your email, sometimes you get message previews there. Check your email!
Once they're gone, they're pretty much gone! But you can try checking your archived messages—sometimes they end up there instead of being totally deleted.
I once accidentally deleted a chat with important info. Turns out the best you can do is ask the other person if they have it saved.
