Trust me, I've done it! Go to your profile, click 'Friends', then 'Edit Privacy'. Set it to 'Only Me' and you're invisible!
You can block your friends list from prying eyes by going to Settings -> Privacy -> Who can see your friends list? -> Choose 'Only Me'. Works like a charm!
