Thanos actually died twice! Thor went for the head in the beginning of Endgame, and later, Iron Man used the Gauntlet to turn him into space dust.
Technically, he disintegrated when Iron Man used the Infinity Stones. Big purple guy couldn't handle Stark tech.
In Endgame, Iron Man did what he had to do and snapped Thanos out of existence. Poetic justice, anyone?
