Xenoblade Chronicles got its name partly due to Tetsuya Takahashi, the game's director, wanting to honor his previous 'Xeno' series, which includes Xenogears and Xenosaga. 'Blade' was added to symbolize the game's focus on weapons and combat.

It's called Xenoblade Chronicles because Monolith Soft's founder, Tetsuya Takahashi, wanted to keep the 'Xeno' prefix from his earlier works, like Xenogears. 'Blade' relates to the Monado, a key weapon in the game.

Short answer: The 'Xeno' part comes from the director's earlier projects, and 'Blade' refers to the Monado weapon.

From my experience with the game, it's clear 'Xeno' keeps the tradition alive from other Xeno-series games, and 'Blade' points to its battle-centric gameplay. It's a homage and a hint wrapped into one!
