Just deactivate it instead. Keeps your info safe while you take a breather. Same steps as deleting, just choose 'Deactivate' instead.
Been there, done that. Just head to 'Settings & Privacy,' click 'Your Facebook Information,' then choose 'Deactivation and Deletion.' Pick 'Permanently Delete Account' and follow the instructions. Don't forget to download your data if you want it!
