If you're worried about your data, you can also download your info before deleting your account through the Instagram settings.
Delete the app from your phone and you're free! Out of sight, out of mind!
Just go to your settings, find 'Account,' and then select 'Delete Your Account.' Follow the instructions and poof, it's gone!
I deleted mine last year! You just go to Instagram's 'Help Center' for step-by-step instructions. Worked perfectly for me.
