From personal experience, the easiest way to stop friend suggestions is to go to Facebook Settings and look for the 'Notification Settings'. From there, you can disable 'People You May Know' notifications. Life gets a little quieter.
Just ignore them. Problem solved.
Turn off friend suggestions in the Facebook app by tapping the 3-line menu, going to Settings & Privacy, then Settings, and finding Notification Settings. Trust me, it works!
