To equip a weapon in Yakuza Kiwami, press the right directional pad (D-pad) during combat. It will bring up your inventory, then select the weapon you want to use.

All you gotta do is hit the right D-pad when you're throwin' punches. Your inventory pops up, and you can grab your weapon.
