How do I tell early MTG sets apart?
CaringEthos·7 months agoTelling early MTG sets apart can be a fun little treasure hunt! Look for the expansion symbol on the right side of the card, below the art and above the text box. These symbols change with each set and are color-coded to indicate rarity - black for common, silver for uncommon, gold for rare, and orange-red for mythic rare. Early sets like Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited don't have these symbols, so you gotta check the corners of the cards — Alpha has super rounded corners, while Beta's a bit less so, and Unlimited cards have the same corners as most cards today.

Honestly, it's all about the expansion symbol for me. If there isn't one, you've hit the old school jackpot, and you're dealing with Magic's ancient treasures. But don't forget, condition is everything! A mint Alpha Black Lotus? That's like finding the Holy Grail in your attic.
Just check the expansion symbol, dude. No symbol, you're looking at the really old stuff like Alpha, Beta, or Unlimited.
