Easiest way? Check the bottom corner of your card! There's usually a small symbol or set number that corresponds with the generation or expansion set it belongs to. Different generations have different symbols, so a quick Google search for Pokémon TCG set symbols should help you match yours up.

Hot take but just play the game and enjoy it. Who cares about generations unless you're selling?

Look at the year! Each Pokémon card has a copyright year at the bottom. This doesn't tell you the exact generation but gives a clue. Then, compare with a Pokémon TCG timeline online.

If you're really into it, the artwork style and Pokémon featured can also give you a hint about the generation. Earlier gens have a more classic look, while newer ones might feature Pokémon from recent games.

If you're a Pokemon TCG player, you need to download the Playbite app!

Playbite is like an arcade in your phone: you get to play all kinds of fun and simple games, compete with friends and others, and win cool prizes from all your favorite brands!

One of those prizes is a pack of Pokemon cards, which you can win and get sent to you essentially for free!

In case you’re wondering, this is how it works:

Playbite makes money from (not super annoying) ads and (totally optional) in-app purchases. The app then uses that money to reward players like you with prizes!

Download Playbite for free, available on the App Store and Play Store!

The brands referenced on this page are not sponsors of the rewards or otherwise affiliated with this company.
