Upgrades are overrated. Just evolve your Porygon if you have the item and candies – it's not that deep.
You need to use the Upgrade item to evolve Porygon into Porygon2! Just go to your Porygon's info screen, tap the Evolve button, and make sure you have enough Porygon Candy.
