In Darling in the Franxx, the robots, called Franxx, are piloted by pairs of children known as Parasites. The piloting system requires one male (Stamen) and one female (Pistil) to sync their emotions and thoughts. It's basically a mecha matchmaker service with giant robots!

Franxx need two pilots working together鈥攐ne in the front and one in the back. Think of it like a tandem bike but more life-threatening and with more emotional baggage.

They work through 'connection' and 'synchronization' between a male and female pilot, who share a deep bond. The emotional bond between the pilots influences the Franxx's performance.

Eh, basically, two kids sit in some really awkward positions and try not to crash the mech. It's anime logic, just roll with it.
