Just claim it and slap some turrets around. Most players are too busy with their own quests to bother you much. Keep an eye out for enemy NPCs though, they pop up at the worst times.

Capturing a public workshop in Fallout 76 is all about strategy and preparation. First, find a workshop that isn't currently claimed. Approach the workshop bench, and it'll give you an option to claim it - make sure you're ready for a fight though, as claiming it triggers waves of enemies. To hold onto it, build defenses like turrets and walls, and keep an eye on the map for incoming attacks from creatures or other players. Staying nearby or teaming up with friends can really help in defending your turf!

Holding public workshops ain't worth the hassle. The resources you spend building defenses could be used elsewhere. Better off teaming with others for quests or events.
