Just deactivate it. It's less dramatic and you can always come back later!
You can deactivate your account by going to Settings & Privacy, then navigating to Your Facebook Information and selecting Deactivation and Deletion. Choose 'Permanently Delete Account'.
I deleted my account last year. You just go to Settings > Your Facebook Information > Deactivation and Deletion, and then choose 'Permanently Delete Account'. Easy peasy!
