Honestly, I tried closing mine but ended up missing the memes too much. But if you're serious, just follow Instagram's instructions on their site.
To close your Instagram account, you need to go to the 'Delete Your Account' page on a web browser, select a reason for leaving from the dropdown menu, and then re-enter your password before clicking 'Permanently delete my account.' Easy peasy!
