You can connect the PS4 controller wirelessly too. Hold down the PS button and the Share button until the light bar starts flashing, then go to your PS4 settings and find 'Bluetooth Devices' to pair it.

From my experience, the quickest way is the USB cable method. Connect the USB cable from the controller to the PS4 and press the PS button. Works every time!
