Expanding your island in Animal Crossing isn't about physically making the landmass bigger, but more about unlocking and upgrading the buildings and facilities on your island. One way is by upgrading your Resident Services from a tent to a building, which happens as you progress in the game. Also, keep talking to Tom Nook; he guides you through most of the expansion projects, like adding more housing plots for villagers, which indirectly expands the usable space on your island by making it more lively and filled with friends!

Short answer: You can't actually expand the 'land' part of your island in Animal Crossing, but you can make it feel way bigger by clearing out space (bye-bye, trees and rocks) and rearranging stuff so every inch of your island is just how you like it. Also, unlocking Terraforming is a game-changer, as it lets you alter the landscape, adding or removing water and cliffs!
Honestly, just Terraform your heart out. It's like playing God but with cuter animals. Once you get the Island Designer app from Tom Nook, after K.K. Slider's concert, you can start playing around with your island's layout. More cliffs, less water? Your call. It's the closest thing to expanding your island you'll get, and it's pretty awesome.
