I’ve been playing since the beginning, and trust me, there are no gems! PokeCoins are what you want, and you can snag them by holding gyms or from the shop!

You can’t actually get 'gems' in Pokemon GO. If you're talking about PokeCoins, you can earn them by defending gyms or buying them with real money.
