Crafting the Mechanical Eye?! Too much work. I usually farm pre-Hardmode bosses until I've got enough loot to trade with other players. Sometimes, you get lucky and someone will trade you the Mechanical Eye for something easy to get.
Just buy it from the Traveling Merchant lol. Sometimes he sells it for 15 gold. Save yourself the hassle of crafting if you're swimming in coins.
Honestly, crafting it is the best way to go. But remember, using it at night summons The Twins. If you're not looking for a surprise boss fight, definitely don't use it until you're ready!
