From my experience, the best way is to buy a PSN gift card and let your friend use it to get the avatar. This has worked for me and my friends multiple times!

Hey! Unfortunately, PlayStation doesn't offer a direct way to gift avatars on the PSN Store. You could give your friend a PSN gift card, and they can purchase the avatar they want themselves!
