It's all about the symbol, folks! Circle = 'better luck next time', diamond = 'okay, not bad', star = 'jackpot', and any weird symbol you don't recognize probably means you've hit the Pokemon TCG lottery.
The rarity of a Pokemon card is usually indicated by the symbols at the bottom right corner of the card. Common cards have a circle, uncommon ones have a diamond, and rare cards sport a star. Some ultra-rare cards might have other symbols like a star H or three stars, and don't forget the shiny, holographic finish that often marks a card as extra special!
