To play with two players in Animal Crossing, one of you needs to be the island's Resident Representative (the first player who started the game). Then, the second player needs to create a character on the same Switch console. After both are set up, simply open the NookPhone in the game, select the 'Call Resident' app, and choose the player you want to invite to your session. Just remember, you'll need two Joy-Cons or controllers so each player can have their own.
The easiest way is to just hand a second controller to your friend or family member and call them into your game using the Call Resident app on your NookPhone. It's super fun but remember, the screen won't split, so you'll have to stay within the same area of the island.
I tried playing with my sister, and honestly, it's not the same as playing solo. The camera follows the leader, so the second player can get dragged around a lot. Still, it's a fun way to spend time together if you don't mind sharing the spotlight.
