From my experience, the best strategy is to always have at least a basic shelter around, cuz you never know when a mutant's gonna ruin your day!
Seriously, just sleep in a shelter and you're good. No shelter, no save. Simple as that.
Just make sure to build a temporary or permanent shelter, then interact with it to save your progress. Don't forget to save often!
