In my experience, the best way to trade is by building a Trade Depot and visiting different enclaves. It keeps the supply line always open and you get better deals.
In State of Decay, to trade with other survivors, you need to build a Trade Depot in your base. Use your Influence to trade items and resources with other enclaves!
Go to another enclave, see what they have, and use your Influence to buy or sell stuff. Easy peasy!
