Just leave it alone for a bit! It'll turn off by itself after a period of inactivity.

Hold down the PS button in the center of the controller for about 10 seconds. This will turn it off. Easy peasy!

From my experience, the simplest way is to hold the PS button and choose 'Turn Off Device' from the menu that pops up. Works every time!
