Unlocking Mario is super easy. Battle Bowser the first time around and voila, Mario's all yours!

You don't need to unlock Mario in Super Mario 64 DS because you start the game as Yoshi and need to rescue Mario first! Head to the first Bowser fight, defeat him, and you'll rescue Mario.
