You can also update via USB. Download the update from the PlayStation website, put it on a USB drive, and then plug it into your PS4. Go to Settings > System Software Update, and choose 'Update from USB Storage Device'.

From my experience, it’s best to keep automatic updates turned on. That way your PS4 will always be up-to-date without you having to lift a finger!
