Honestly, it feels like the game just throws darts at a board to decide squads when you're solo. You never know who you're gonna get, which is part of the fun (or pain).
In Apex Legends, squads are usually formed based on the matchmaking system. It pairs you up with other players who are looking for a game at the same time. If you wanna team up with friends, you can do that too by inviting them to your squad before you start the match. It's basically random if you're solo queuing, but you have control if you're forming a squad with friends.
