The original Fullmetal Alchemist series ends with Ed ending up in an alternate dimension while Al is restored to his human body with no memory of their journey. It's a bittersweet conclusion that leaves them separated but alive.

Hate to spoil it, but in Brotherhood, they both end up back to normal with a proper full circle moment. Ed even gets the girl!

Ed sacrifices his ability to use alchemy forever in exchange for Al's life. They go on their separate paths but remain close – it's poignant and fulfilling!
