Honestly, Gideon's death was so unexpected. I was at a pre-release event reading the story inserts and was like, "No way they're killing off Gideon!" But yep, he swapped fates with Liliana to take out Bolas. Pretty epic, but still sad.
Gideon Jura, one of MTG's most heroic characters, meets his end in the 'War of the Spark' storyline. He sacrifices himself to save the multiverse, using the Blackblade to absorb the death blow meant for Liliana Vess. Essentially, Gideon takes on the curse that was killing Liliana, heroically dying in her place.
