In Splatoon 2, the ranking system is based on your performance in Ranked Battles. You start off at C- and work your way up to X rank by winning matches and earning points. Each time you reach a certain point threshold, you can be promoted, but losing too much can also demote you back to a lower rank.

So in Splatoon 2, you rank up by winning in Ranked Battles and earn points! Each mode has its own separate rank, and you go from C- to X. Be careful, losing could make you drop down.
