The manga is only ahead by a few arcs. Nothing much unless you're a hardcore fan.
As someone who's followed both, the manga has a lot more content after the anime stops, especially with the Dark Continent Expedition arc!
The Hunter x Hunter manga is way ahead of the anime. The anime covers up to Chapter 339 of the manga, but as of now, the manga has over 390 chapters. So, you're missing quite a bit if you stop at the anime!
