Just to pinpoint it - Modern format starts from 8th Edition (2003). Anything before that, and you're looking at cards too old for Modern play.

Modern in Magic The Gathering stretches all the way back to 8th Edition and Mirrodin, which were released in 2003. So, if you've got cards from then onwards, you're in the clear for Modern!
