You can swim out as far as you can until the game gently nudges you back towards the playable area with a cheeky force-field effect.
Yea, just don't expect to swim forever... there's an invisible wall, like, not too far out.
Trust me, I tried swimming to freedom and hit an invisible wall... lesson learned: stick to the map!
