The periodic table is organized by increasing atomic number, which is the number of protons in an atom's nucleus. Elements are also grouped into columns based on similar chemical properties and rows by increasing electron configurations.
It's all about those atomic numbers and electron configurations. Higher the number, further down the table.
Mendeleev arranged the periodic table by atomic number and chemical properties, and we still use his brilliant design today with some tweaks for new elements!
