During meiosis, the chromosome number is halved. So if a cell starts with 46 chromosomes, the resulting gametes will have 23 chromosomes.

Meiosis reduces the chromosome number by half. Each of the four daughter cells gets half the original chromosome count. So, for humans, that's 23 chromosomes.

In meiosis, you end up with gametes having half the original chromosome number. For humans, each gamete has 23 chromosomes.
