PvZ launched as a paid game initially, and then expanded into freemium versions with in-app purchases, which means it's been raking in cash both upfront and in the long tail. So yeah, it made a lot of dough.
Honestly, it's hard to quantify with all the versions out there, but considering how everyone and their zombie was playing it at one point, 'a lot' would be an understatement.
