It focuses mainly on the initial events of Kaneki becoming a half-ghoul and adjusting to his new life. So, think of it as an appetizer rather than the full course!
The Tokyo Ghoul movie covers just a small part of the manga鈥攏o substitute for the real thing, IMO.
If you want the full, detailed experience, definitely check out the manga. The movie is a decent intro, though.
