Kirito starts the series at 14 years old but is 16 by the end of Aincrad arc. Asuna is 15 at the start and turns 17 later on.
Kirito is 16 years old when he first enters Sword Art Online. Asuna is 17. Both are slightly older by Alicization.
Honestly, it's all about the younger teen crowd. Most characters fall into the 14-17 range.
